Re: Order Books
In Response To: Re: Order Books ()

Good luck with your search for the order book you referenced.

While this is not what you are specifically seeking; but since I had already begun pulling some of my notes on Likens, perhaps others could find the information instructive.

11/30/63 Magruder to Boggs- Gen Waul has reported today with instructions, known to the general cdg, by which he is authorized to mount Waul's Legion and the 2nd Tex Infy. I have Brigaded the 2nd Tex and Waul's Legion with Likens' Regt and the 3rd Tex Infy, all, with the exception of Likens' Regt, splendidly drilled Infy- the best Bgde under my command, which I have reserved for Gen Waul. If he attempts to mount the 2nd Tex and his legion, it will be a failure, as the horses are not to be had, the State troops and other calls having exhausted the country. To disband his legion and 2nd Tex and send them home, in the hopeless task of procuring horses, will disorganize this excellent Bgde, whose services are indispensably necessary to the defense of the State, where they will soon be in front of the enemy.

Other NARA sources, Official Records and various others

In July 1861, the ninety-day enlistments of the Sabine Pass Guard expired. Most of the men re-enlisted into two Co’s, one of them an artillery company, again known as the Sabine Pass Guard, captained by James B. Likens, a Sabine Pass attorney. The remainder enlisted in a cavalry company, the Ben McCulloch Coast Guard, raised by Dr. James H. Blair, a Sabine physician. This company became Company A of both Likens' Battalion and its successor, Spaight's Battalion, and after December 1, 1861, was captained by O. M. Marsh, a West Point graduate. These companies were mustered into the state Militia for one year, and in 1862, K. D. Keith was elected captain of Co. B.[4]
In September 1861, Captain Likens visited General Paul O. Hebert's headquarters in Galveston, where he was promoted to major and authorized to raise Likens' Sixth Battalion of State Militia. Likens' unit at Sabine Pass was to consist of Likens' cavalry Company A, soon to be commanded by Captain Marsh; Captain Blair's artillery Company B, soon to be captained by Keith; infantry Company C of Newton County, commanded by Captain Josephus S. Irvine, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto; and infantry Company D of Tyler County, commanded by Captain W. J. Spurlock.[5]
In February and March 1862, two more companies became a part of Likens' Battalion. Captain George W. O'Brien had been discharged because of illness from the Army of Northern Virginia. After his recovery, he raised infantry Company E at Beaumont, built Camp Spindletop, located about four miles southwest of the "sawdust city," and drilled and marched out on the prairies near Beaumont. Captain Ashley Spaight had raised a cavalry company of militia in Liberty and Chambers counties, known as the Moss Bluff Rebels, and with their assignment to it, Major Likens' command became a battalion of six companies.[8] Also in March 1862, Likens' Battalion was mustered into the Confederate Army for the duration of the war.[9]
In June 1862, the last major command shakeup occurred when Major Likens was promoted and authorized to raise a regiment of Texas cavalry. Captain Spaight was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the new Spaight's Eleventh Battalion, and Captain Irvine of Company C was elected major and executive officer.

6/17/63 Likens to Magruder’s AG-By S O #47 from Gen K Smith I have been authorized to raise a Regt of Infy for the war. Making little progress due to the number of people in the state with authority to raise Cav- In addition the call for 10,000 men allows men to volunteer in the Cav. I could be much faster in raising the men if the orders were changed to Cav and that the men to serve as Cav but would be trained as Cav & as Infy. I can raise the Regt of Infy, but it will take a much longer time, and I am anxious to be in the field. See enclosed from D B Martin

Enclosed from D B Martin-6/16/63 D B Martin, Gen E S T Dist to Capt E Turner, AG, Houston-Likens has approval from Sec of War to raise a Bn or Regt of Infy. I feel sure there are adequate numbers of able bodied men to accomplish that, but it would be much faster if the order was changed to Cav based on the preferences of Texans.

8/17/63 Smith to Magruder-Col Likens has applied for permission to consolidate the 4 Co’s raised by Lt Col Davidson now at Camp Groce with those he has been authorized to raise so as to form a full Regt. It has the full approval of the Gen cdg. He has also applied for permission to recruit among the state troops of those volunteering to enlist for the war. It is OK with Gen Smith provided it meets your approval and that of the Governor

10/7/63 Likens reports 10 Co‘s organized by authority of S O #168 from Gen Magruder. Anxious to get in the field and request orders for the organization- The men are very well mounted and have good horse equipment but are unarmed

1/8/64 Hqs ARMY OF OBSERVATION, Camp Wharton, Gen Bee to Capt Turner, AAG, District of Texas-I acknowledge receipt of two communications dated 1/5/64. The communication from Capt Marmion is the 1st & only information I have received on the subject. I hear but seldom from the mouth of Caney, and only through Capt Turner. In accordance with instructions I shall proceed as soon as possible to the Caney, and take with me Woods’ Bgde. Likens’ Regt moved yesterday to support Col Buchel. I am ordered under no circumstances to permit the enemy to gain possession of the mouth of the Caney or Bernard. I will comply with the order as far as possible to do so, but as the works at those points are not finished, nor any guns at hand to place in them, I shall have to rely on my troops alone to defend it, and my ability to do so will depend upon the force the enemy brings…

1/11/64 Hqs ARMY OF OBSERVATION, Ewing’s Bridge, Cedar Lake, Brazoria Co., Gen Bee to Capt Turner-I state, for the information of the Gen cdg that Likens Regt is with Col Buchel; Pyron’s on Cedar Lake, a mile below Ewing’s Bridge. Woods’ & Debray’s commands are in the vicinity of the Caney, from 10 to 15 miles above Hawkins. There is corn for three weeks in the vicinity of their camps. The works at the month of the Caney are progressing very slowly.

3/11/64 Bee reports-I marched from Columbus, on the Colorado River, in Tex, March 11, with six Regts of Cav-Debray's, Buchel's, Terrell's, Woods', Gould's, and Likens' and reported to Gen Taylor, cdg army of operations in La, on April 5 at Mansfield with the three first-named Regts. The others, being delayed by incidents of so long march, did not arrive in time to participate in the battles of the 8th and 9th

Mentioned in Bee's report: Likens' Regt arrived piecemeal and fell in with Terrell's Regt at the Battle of Mansfield. More men from Likens' 35th Tex Cav Regt and from Gould's 23rd Tex Cav Regt arrived in time to fight at Pleasant Hill, with Peter Woods' 36th Tex Cav arriving just as the battle ended.

Feb 16, 1865. Hqs TM Dept, Gen Buckner, Shreveport, Cdg District of West La, Natchitoches: The Gen cdg directs that you will order Col Likens with his Regt to report to Major-Gen Wharton at Hempstead. He is determined to dismount a large portion of the Cav, and to prevent complaints has selected Regts from each command and has taken those most recently organized. Maj Davis goes to Houston to get the guns [?] that were turned in by the Cav Regts you dismtd. Please give any necessary order. He will also make inquiry about the 700 pistols you wrote me about.
Will you do me the favor of ordering Smith’s Co to me immediately? Waller has only 9 [7] Co’s present, one of them Menard’s Co with only 6 men.
I hear that Magruder is on his way to relieve you-is this so? What does it mean? What is the cause of the change? Where are you going? Write me fully by Maj Hart who will give you this.
If you can chance to order Smith’s Co to me at once & will give the order to Maj Hart he will deliver it and give instructions to Capt Smith.
I think we will have an overflow in the Brazos. When can I send Likens’ Regt to Hockley-give me 3 days notice-Can you have transportation [cars] at Hockley on Sunday; for Baylor at [Wither] on Tues; & for Terry at Hockley Thurs week?
