He Says He Shot Stonewall Jackson

Fired the Shot That Killed Gen. Jackson

This claim has been made by William A. Dudley
who was found dead in this city today.

William A. Dudley, aged 66 years, who has resided in San Antonio seven years, and who claimed to have fired the shot which killed General Stonewall Jackson, the famous Confederate leader, was found dead in bed in his room at 1919 West Commerce Street, about 6 o'clock this morning.
Investigation as to the cause of death is being made by Justice Fisk, who is of the opinion that death was caused by natural causes and that will probably be his verdict.
Dudley on numerous occasions had stated that he was a soldier under Gen. Stonewall Jackson and that when Gen. Jackson was fired upon by mistake by his own men, he, Dudley, fired the shot which caused the death of the great General. Dudley, to back up his statement, offered to make affidavit before a notary that he was in the party that fired upon Gen. Jackson.
When Dudley retired last night he was apparently in good health. He had not been ill and worked at his trade of carpentering. When found dead this morning he was partially dressed, death having come to him as he was dressing.
The deceased was born in North Carolina and was married. He had lived in Texas forty-five years.
