Both sides were officered by men of the old, pre-war army, and maintained strick compliance with the articles of war and with the Regulations for the Army of the United States which was copied almost verbatim by the Confederate Army.

Quartermaster forms were identical and quite often we find documents in soldiers files which were actual printed Federal forms.

Sometime in the 1870, a group of both Federal and Confederate armies served as advisors to the Egyptian army. Their officers would laugh at the penchant our officers had for paper work.
