Hello R.D. You're probably correct as to the origin of the name Maverick. We may be dealing with a generation gap? Back in the late 50's and early 60's there was a television series called Maverick. "Sugar Foot" and "Cheyenne" and "Wagon Train"and "Maverick" would be shown on Saturday mornings. According to one episode of the television show "Maverick" the brothers Bret and Bart Maverick came back to Texas after the war and were not welcome because of changing sides during the war and began their life as gamblers across the west. In 1994 the movie "Maverick" came out which you might be familiar with Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson played Bret Maverick. James Garner who played Bret Maverick in the old television series played the part of Mel Gibson's father.
