Hello R.D. As far as I know there were no galvanized Yankees in the Sioux Indian War of 1862. This is not to imply that there were not galvanized Yankees in Minnesota after 1862 because there were hundreds. Some galvanized Yankees had duty in the far west including Oregon, the Montana territory etc.

Each soldier seemed to have his own reasons for being galvanized. As I mentioned to Joe about a year ago on the prison board there were dozens of them that were really Yankee deserters who told their the Federal authorities they Confederates thus creating a false CMSR etc. And there were Confederates who deserted and claimed to be Yankees only so they could be transferred to a prison up North and then joined the 3rd Maryland Cavalry. That part I should not disclose because it will be published in a few weeks.

I told Joe then that my work had not yet been completed and that I would release their names and units when the work was completed. The Fort Delaware Society now has my completed work on the biographies of the galvanized Yankees with the 3rd Maryland Cavalry. Joe if you will send me your email I will provide you with the proof as found at the NARA in DC concerning who these Yankee deserters really were and if you will please keep the information to yourself. If I remember correctly you had found it odd that the former Confederates had been separated from the rest of the Confederate prison population at Fort Delaware when they expressed an interest in joining the Union military. One of the many surprises at NARA was a tintype of a former Texas Confederate who joined the 3rd Maryland Cavalry. I'll send you that also if you would like to see it.

I found the writers of Maverick leap years ahead of their time historically. Although we laugh and poke fun at it now in the 1950's it was one of the better written westerns insofar as a television series in my opinion.
