Waul's Texas Legion - Willis Battalion, Company F

My great-grandfather was Samuel Parsons Johnson who hailed from Carroll County, MS. He fought for the confederacy in Waul's Texas Legion, Willis Battalion, Company F. I found his name in the index under S.P. Johnson, which is how his name often appears in most documents I've found. Have not ordered his military records yet, but plan to do so.

I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on something which has been a mystery to me. In looking at some of the other soldiers in this company, I notice that several came from MS as did my great-grandfather, who I believe lived his entire life in MS. So why then did a MS boy enlist in a TX unit instead of one in his own backyard? Any thoughts or insight greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone has any information on or connection to S.P. I'd love to hear from you.
