Buffalo Blues

About ten years ago or so there was some interest in the Buffalo Blues, a unit raised in Bellville. I've recently been working with the transcriptions of the Lucy Merry Pier diary held in the Texas Collection at Baylor University. I think this is the only copy outside of the family--it's the only one listed in WorldCat. Lucy's daughter, Sarah, made the flag for the Buffalo Blues.

Saturday 8th [May 1861] Our neighbor's and the citizen's generally met and formed themselves into a company at Holcomb's point just above Parton Kenney's to form a military company. The camp called Camp Kenney and Company's name the Buffalo Blues Uniform blue with a yellow stripe on the sides of the pants and the officers coat trimmed with yellow.
Tuesday [July] 2nd [1861]...Sarah at work at her flag yesterday and to day.
Saturday July 6th [1861] Sarah at work on the flag.
Saturday [July] 13th...all went to the Barbecue then after the flag was delivered Sarah went on home with Sis

BELLVILLE [TX] COUNTRYMAN, July 17, 1861, p. 2, c. 1
We attended the barbecue near Travis on Saturday last, and were much pleased with the manner in which things generally were conducted. There were four uniformed military companies there, who were formed into a battalion and went through considerable of the drill under Col. Paine. A flag with a neat address by Miss Pier on the part of the ladies, was presented to the Buffalo Blues. Dr. Francis gracefully received it making a patriotic speech in reply.

Note: I have a scan of Sarah's speech from the same Baylor collection, but I haven't transcribed it yet. It's fairly short.

Wednesday April 9, 1862...Mr. Catlin and Cleveland and Fritz going along with the flag of the Buffalo Blues that Sarah made I presume to use it [?] to the company.
Thursday April 10, 1862...This morning nearly all of the Citizen's of Travis [town, not county] turned out to see them start off, they went off with our flag floating on the breeze also a very nice one they brought with them.

Different group--
Thursday May 29, 1862 Mr. Pier at the store Cy Campbell there said Sammie would come home next week after the flag presentation on Saturday made by Miss Mary Waller for Waller's Reg't.

I'm heading back over there tomorrow to get a little further. I'm currently at July 26, 1862. The mother's diary ends on October 16, 1863, and the daughter's diary runs January 18, 1863 through May 23, 1870.
