Re: Willis' Battalion Texas Cavalry

He enlisted in the Legion May 8, 1862 in Gonzales County, Tx, where he resided, his horse was valued at $90 and equipments at $30. He was last recorded present, sick on the Sept/Oct, 1864 bi-monthly muster taken at Camp Cold Water, Miss. [6 miles North of Holly Springs]. He had never been paid. This is the last record of this presence.

Based on his effects consisting of $76, I assumed this must have been back pay due him. Privates were paid $11 a month. I concluded therefore that he had served some six [+] months, which would have placed his death sometime in November/December, 1862.

In as much as his name does not appear on his companies Jan/Feb, 1863 muster roll, because of his death, he must have been dropped from the rolls on the missing Nov/Dec. 1862 muster roll. Where or when he died we will never know by these records.

He could have died anywhere from the area of Holly Springs to Grenada, Mississippi. There is also the possibility that he could have been admitted to a nearby hospital.
