Conner in 1869 Lamar and Red River Counties
In Response To: Re: Battlefield Visit ()

Gary D. Bray,

Since you have listed Conners of Northeast Texas, please help me identify this politician, named Conner, mentioned in Samuel Day's Oct 12, 1869 letter to his father-in-law, Col. James Bourland.

"... I see some of our newspapers are giving your little man Conner a particular bring in.** Jack Johnson made a speech at Ladonia and preached Saturday & has gone up in your country preaching & speaking. He made a speech at Paris [Lamar County] last week & the PARIS PRESS talks up his speech & then into Dallas. The PARIS PRESS is strong on Conner, so is the THE STANDARD [Clarksville, Red River County]. Am at a great loss to know or even give an idea how the election will go for Congress. As there seems to be great objections used against all the candidates. ..."
.
**.. "a bring in" is an obsolete term for candidate, e.g., a bring-in, similar to "a write-in".

DAY, Samuel Day, b-1822 TN; m-Nancy Jane Bourland; 1860 Fannin Co TX cen p221, Ladonia.
