Lt. McCord's men killed thirty-eight men, 1860

My objective is to learn more about the 1860 event, described by W.F. Matt" Guthrie in a 1929 article, when thirty-eight (38) men were killed by Lt. J.E. McCord's men. ..I've ordered CORTINA, DEFENDING THE MEXICAN NAME IN TEXAS pub. 2007 by Jerry D. Thompson in an attempt to better understand the events along the Rio Grande River after the 1859 Cortina War. ..This question is better defined on my web page: http://www.bourlandcivilwar.com/GuthrieBourlandsRegtCoD.htm
.
One Texas archival record relevant to this 1860 event:

.
CLAIM OF STATE OF TEXAS FOR DEFENSE OF THE FRONTIER. 9 ...Optical Character Recognition was poor but meant:
.
Ed Burleson, captain; J.E. McCord, first lieutenant; James Carson, second lieutenant: J.G. Barbee, surgeon; 75 men; mustered in, between January 1 and June 1, 1860; mustered out, September 7, 1860.
.
Key is the John Gaston Barbee (1832-1921), who was bro-in-law to James R. Carson (1826-1880) and Nathaniel Franklin Carson (1813-1886).

.
James R. Carson served in Spaight's 21st Cav., Co I, recruited primarily from Brazos Co TX where these Carsons lived; siblings lived in Leon and later Hamilton Co TX. ..James R. Carson's family stated that he requested to be in Waul's Legion, so it sounds as though he was an enthusiastic soldier. ..James' older brother, Nathaniel Franklin Carson was evidently patrolling in Bourland's Border Regt. before March 1, 1864 when Bourland's Regt. was accepted into the CSA and records were finally kept. ..Some had been patrolling the North and West Frontier since February 1863.

1. Replying to your letter of Sept.7, 1918, the Jas. E. McCord, 1st Lieutenant, (Burleson’s Company) was mustered into service by Capt. J.M.W. Hall on Jan. 30, 1860. (no place mentioned.)
.
Captain Ed Burleson’s company was mustered out and honorably discharged from the service of the State on the 7th of Sept., 1860, at San Marcos, Texas. ..Jos. Walker was the mustering officier who discharged the company.
.
2. A certificate as to the correctness of the roll, signed by E. Burleson, is dated Jan., 30, 1860, and the station is Beaver Camp. This may or may not have been the place where the company was mustered in.
.
Jas. A. Harley,
The Adjutant General.

***Patrolling on the North and West Frontier had to be the most lonesome, boring service. Many who patrolled for Bourland's Regt. were older men -- all died-in-the-wool Confederates -- who took turns with their neighbors patrolling in 6-week shifts, i.e. some stayed behind to care for their families. By the way, many who patrolled the frontier stopped before March 1, 1864. I speculated that I would find about 50 who served but their names weren't recorded. I'm proud to say that thus far, I have found proofs for 38 "Additional Soldiers."
