David F. Adair

Enlisted as a Private
"B" Co. TX 35th Cavalry

David F. Adair enlisted as a Private in(2d) Company B, Brown' Battalion Cavalry, June 10, 1862 at Fayetteville, the March 1865 Regimental Return records that he was "Left sick at Boonville March 25th, 1865," papers in his file regarding his son Isaac N. Adair, note that David hired himself as a substitute into the regiment.

The 12th (Brown's) Battalion Texas Cavalry, Companies A to D, was formed about April 8, 1862, by the transfer of four cavalry companies from the 4th (Bates) Regiment Texas Volunteers. Company E was organized May 1, 1862, of recruits and some men transferred from Companies D and L of the same regiment. Company F was formed June 17, 1862, of men transferred from other companies of this battalion (1st) Company B was transferred to the 7th (Fontaine's) Battalion Texas Artillery March 1, 1863, and subsequently became the 7th Texas Field Battery. Captain H. W. Hargrove's Independent Company Texas Cavalry was soon afterward assigned to this command as (2d) Company H. The battalion was increased to a regiment of ten companies November 11, 1863, by the transfer of four cavalry companies from the 13th (Bate's) Regiment Texas Infantry (formerly the 4th Regiment Texas Volunteers). This organization was also known as Brown's Regiment Texas Cavalry but it was officially designed the 35th Regiment Texas Cavalry.

D. F. Adair, enlisted as a Private in Company E, 5th Texas Infantry, July 19, 1861 at Washington, Texas, reported sick at hospital Dumfries, Virginia October 20 ,1861, discharged for disability December 14/27, 1861, 43 year old Planter, born in Louisiana

5th Regiment, Texas Infantry

5th Infantry Regiment was assembled at Richmond, Virginia, in October, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Harris, Colorado, Leon, Walker, Montgomery, Washington, Jefferson, Liberty, Milam, Polk, and Trinity. As a part of Hood's Texas Brigade it served under Generals Hood, J.B. Robertson, and J. Gregg. The unit participated in the difficult campaigns of the Amry of Northern Virginia from Seven Pines to Cold Harbor except when it was with Longstreet at Suffolk, Chickamauga, and Knoxville. It fought in the Petersburg trenches north and south of the James River and around Appomattox. This regiment contained 341 effectives in April, 1862 and lost more than half of the 409 engaged at Gettysburg. It surrendered 12 officers and 149 men. The field officers were Colonels James J. Archer, Robert M. Powell, and Jerome B. Robertson; Lieutenant Colonels Walter B. Botts, King Bryan, and John C. Upton; and Majors Paul J. Quattlebaum, Jefferson C. Rogers, and David M. Whaley.
