Sorry, but all we can come up with is a dead end.

Williamson Raney, age 24, 5th Sergeant, Capt. Thos. J. Stanfield's Company, Newman's Battalion Tennessee Infantry,* enlisted October 20, 1862 at Thompson's Creek, Bedford County, Tenn., by Capt. Thos. J. Stanfield for 3 years or the war, recorded on the Jan. & Feb., 1863 muster roll as absent, sick with measles, Tullahoma, Tenn., recorded present on the next muster roll for Mar. & Apr., 1863 where the company was in Camp near Fairfield, no further records

Note: The subsequent bi-monthly muster roll for the period May & June, 1863 did not survive to be recorded in the records. The next surviving muster was held for the period July & August, 1863 at Louden, Tenn. Muster rolls for the company exist up to August 31, 1864 and his name does not appear. This would indicate that on the missing May & June, 1864 muster roll, he was dropped from the rolls. Reason could be death, discharge, capture, desertion, etc. We have no way of knowing. Had he been captured we would expect to have seen Yankee POW records, which are not present.

* This company subsequently became Company C, 23rd Battalion Tennessee Infantry

23rd Battalion, Tennessee Infantry (Newman's)

23rd Infantry Battalion was organized at camp near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in November, 1862. Its members were raised in Lincoln, Hardin, Bedford, and Franklin counties. The unit contained five companies and served in J.C. Brown's, Brown's and Reynolds' Consolidated, and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. In November, 1863, it was consolidated with the 45th Regiment. The battalion fought at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, then participated in various conflicts during the Atlanta Campaign. Later it moved back to Tennessee with Hood but was not engaged at Franklin and Nashville. It ended the war in North Carolina. This unit lost twenty-eight percent of the 155 at Chickamauga, and the 45th/23rd Battalion totalled 316 men and 340 arms in December, 1863. It was included in the surrender on April 26, 1865. Major Tazewell W. Newman was in command.
