August
Recruiting the regiment, Gathering of volunteers near Houston, TX
September
Swearing in ceremonies, Delays in Houston, Journey to New Orleans, More delays in New Orleans, Change of destination from Virginia to Kentucky
October
Trip through Nashville, Arrival at Bowling Green, Regimental organization, Procurement of Horses
November
Beginning of measles and pneumonia epidemic, First encounters with the enemy, Skirmish at Tomkinsville
December
Many deaths and discharges from illness, Skirmish near Columbia, First pitched battle, Col. Terry Killed, Regiment pulled back to rest and recuperate
1862

January
Regimental and Company Elections held, Col. Lubbok dies, Wharton elected Col. Bunting appointed Chaplain, Additional deaths, discharges, and resignations Camp movement.
February
Confederate Forces Withdraw from KY, Terry's Rangers serve as rear guard on retreat to Nashville, Rangers escort retreating forces from Fort Donelson to Franklin, Rangers move to Murfreesboro and then to Shelbyville.
March
Three companies return to Murfreesboro, and serve with John Hunt Morgan, the entire regiment journeys to Corinth. Major recruiting efforts in Texas.
April
Company L enlists for 90 days, Rangers perform scout and picket duties, the Battle of Shiloh, rearguard action at Fallen Timbers, Rangers camp near Corinth, move to Reinzi, Brigaded with Adams, set out for Tuscumbia.
May
Move to Lamb's Ferry, cross the Tennessee River, Engagement at Hewey's Bridge, move on Winchester, recross Tennessee River.

Captain Charles T. Noel motally wounded at Hewey's Bridge, Ala May 9, died May 11

Leave Camp. Helms Cavalry crosses Lamb's Ferry. One squadron crosses river.
Diary - J. T. Pettus, Co. F
"We are relieved this morning & move forward I am sent on ahead to procure forage find a beautiful scope of country nicely improved around B. Roost & mouth of R Road near the river we camp at Cherokee on M & C R R"

Promotion - A. D. Harris, Co. I
Promoted to Captian 5/7/1862.

Thursday, May 8

Diary - G. L. Macmurphy, Co. H
Slept on Banks of River last night. Our company crossed over early this morning. Day spent ferrying over regiment. Waggons began crossing at dusk. Camp .5 miles on the side of a road in an old field. Waggons arrive in camp about midnight
Diary - J. T. Pettus, Co. F
"Start early in advance of the command arrive in Tuscumbia about twelve which place is nearly deserted on account of the advent of the enemy into that place in leaving they destroyed & carried off a great deal of property"
Battle of Hewey's Bridge
Detachment under Capt. Houston and force from 1st KY Cav. go on a raid to Bethel. Not finding the enemy they attacked a nearby trestle. Enemy losses: 15 dead, 12 wounded, 47 men and officers captured, 8 negroes captured. CS Losses: 5 killed (including Capt. Harris and William DeWoody, & 1other Ranger) 7 wounded. link LINK Capt Noel of Co C 1st KY mortally wounded. Col. JW Griffith wounded J. N. McKoin Wounded

Enlisted in Houston, TX by Lt. Groce.
History - Reminiscences of the Terry Rangers by J. K. P. Blackburn
The command went through middle Tennessee and had a fight or heavy skirmish with the Yankees at Sulphur Trestle in Giles County. I do not recall any results of that light as reported to us except Captain Harris of Company I lost his life there.

"A travel of four miles brings us to the river at Bainbridge ferry ten miles above Florence where we cross we camp four miles up on the Rogersville road a portion of our Reg. have a fight with the enemy near Athens Alabama we loose one of our best officers & two privates three others of other cavalry killed we kill 17 of the enemy & take the entire command prisenors burn the bridge & return in safety"
