Re: 17th Battalion Tenn Cavalry (Sanders)

As I recall, I once tried to find Sanders in the 1870 census, but could not find a reference to him. The background you relate is very interesting. Sanders company was raised in Shelby County, as I recall, so I assume he was from around Memphis.

I would like to know if Sanders left any journal or writings about his company/battalion during the Civil War. (Or if any member of the battalion did so).

As I set forth in my prior message, I am particulalry interested in the first half of 1864. Sanders' Battalion was supposedly joined with the 17th Mississippi Cav. Battalion to form the 9th Miss Cav Regt. (Miller's Regt) around the very end of 1863. But a document in the official records relates Sanders was captured in Northern Mississippi in February 1864 (where Forrest was countering Smith), when the newly formed regiment was in Middle Mississippi opposing Sherman. As I also previously stated, my ggg grandfather is recorded as being captured in West Tennnessee that Spring, around the time Forrest's command was in that area. I think it is possible that Sanders' Battalion, a "Tennessee" unit, may have been initially left with Forrest, and joined Miller only later as the regiment headed for Alabama and Georgia.
