Carolyn,

In late September of 1864, William Twiggs, Soloman Stansbury and Iley Stuart, were all three deserters from both the Confederate and Union armies ( they all wanted to stay in Fannin County GA.) They decided to create their own little dominion by raising a mounted company and trying to control Fannin County. Governor Joe Brown, himself a native of adjacent Union County dispatched James J. Findley and a militia company from Lumpkin County to restore Confederate control. Tobias Woody was one of his men. I believe Tobias was well up into his fifties by this time. Findley captured a group of this company at Dial and transported them forty miles to Dahlonega. There Stansbury, Stuart and a man names William Witt were executed by firing squad. William Twiggs escaped to Cleveland TN. That is about all that I know of our ancestors service in the militia.
See... Sarris, A Seperate Civil War, 126-33.

Good to see you back on the board.

James.
