Does not look like your ggrandfather is the James Brooks of the 56th Virginia, will have to run down the Tennessee men later.

Enlisted on 7/26/1864 at Mecklenburg, VA as a Private.

On 7/26/1864 he mustered into "A" Co. VA 56th Infantry
He died of disease on 7/1/1865 at Halifax County, VA
(Brought home sick from prison and never left his bed.)

He was listed as:
* Furloughed 3/27/1865 Chimborazo Hospl, Richmond, VA
* POW 4/3/1865 Jackson Hospl, Richmond, VA
* Confined 4/14/1865 Libby Prison, Richmond, VA
* Confined 4/23/1865 Newport News, VA
* Oath Allegiance 6/14/1865 Newport News, VA (Released)

He was described at enlistment as:
5' 9.0", black eyes, dark hair

(Widow Marla P. Brooks applied for pension Oct 29, 1890
at Vernon Hill, VA. disallowed as husband did
not die in service.)
