Re: 23d Batt. TN Inf. (Newman's) Co. C

You will find the battalion's short history at: http://www.tngenweb.org/civilwar/csainf/csa23.html

I find neither in either the 1860 or 1870 Federal census.

Williamson Raney, age 24, 5th Sergeant, enlisted in Captain Thos. J. Stanfield's Company, Newman's Battalion Tennessee Infantry,** October 20, 1862 at Thompson's Creek, Bedford County, Tenessee by Capt. Thos. J. Stnfield for 3 years or the war, recorded on the Jan & Feb, 1863 muster roll as "Absent sick with measles," the company was located at Tullahoma, Tenn. at the end of this recording period, last paid February 28, 1863, recorded present on the Mar & Apr, 1863, muster roll, the company then located in Camp near Fairfield, no further records

Note: The subsequent May & June, 1863 bi-monthly muster roll was not recorded in these records, that muster would have recorded that he was dropped from the rolls, perhaps from disability, capture, discharge, desertion, etc., as he was not recorded on the following July & Aug, 1863 or subsequent muster rolls

This could be a brother, cousin, etc.

Marion F. Raney, resident of Bedford, Tenn., Private, Company C, Newman's Battalion Tennessee Infantry, enlisted October 20, 1862 at Thomps' Creek, exchanged from 37th Tennessee for R. J. Reagor/n?, 3 recorded on the July & Aug, 1863 muster roll as "Deserted July 1, 1863," recorded on a list, dated July 9, 1863, of deserters from Brown's Brigade on the retreat from Wartrace to Chattanooga, no further records

** This company subsequently became Company C, 23rd Battalion Tennessee Infantry.
