Three Days Rations

We frequently read that in preparation for the march, "The cooks were told to prepare three days rations for each man."

Questions: Was there a uniform ration for the march, what did it consist of, how was each soldier's packaged, and how did he carry?

I've never seen any reference to such details, although I have seen reference to a day's ration as weighing three pounds.

I've just scanned "Customs of the Service" by August V.Kautz, 1864 to no avail.
