Mr. Beck, I have about a dozen oral history stories passed down from my great, grandparents, James Alfred Cofer and Mary Jane Vann Cofer. These stories were told to my father by his grandparents. In researching them I have found them to be quite accurate. Mary Jane lived on the GA-AL line and rode to the sight of the surrender. She said that she watched Straight's men burn their personal papers. This seems strange to me that men going into captivity would destroy letters from home.
