Land Brothers Of Monroe County, Tenn.

Attempting to learn how to upload photos. These brothers were my 2nd cousins 4 x removed. They were from Monroe County, Tennessee. The photo, (if successfully uploaded,) was taken before 1908 when the two on each end died.

Ellison Land, Enlisted and Mustered into Co.K 31st Tn. Inf.3-21-1862 at Sweetwater,Tn." present & on the rolls " till surrendered as part of the Vicksburg garrison 7-4-1863. Furloughed at Enterprise,Miss.7-22-1863. Later,caught behind Federal lines, he couldn't (or simply didn't) rejoin the army.

Tillman Howard Land Enlisted in Madisonville, Monroe County,Tenn. In Co B 59th Tn Mtd Inf Also served in Co K 39th Tn Present and on the roll till Dec 20,1862 when he deserted to join the Union Army in Kentucky. Family lore says Tillman killed a Confederate officer for "remarks directed at his Cherokee wife." On Sept.19, 1864, he enlisted in the Federal Army Co.B 7th Tn Mtd Inf at Athens Tn, mustered out July 27, 1865 at Nashville, Tn blue eyes light hair fair complexion 6' 1" apparently never paid till he mustered out. He drew a federal pension for his service as a Yankee soldier. Went to Texas following the war, Two of his sons became Texas Rangers.

James Land March 6, 1862, he enlisted at Morristown, Tn. in Co A 59th Tn Inf.Wounded and paroled at Vicksburg, Miss He is shown AWOL Sept 2,1863 Unable to rejoin the Rebel Army in Union occupied East Tennessee. Along with a fourth brother, William, who served in the 62nd Tenn, and was also paroled at Vicksburg, James also headed for Texas following the war.
