Re: barry's light Artillery (Lookout Artillery)

The Lookout Artillery was engaged June 7-8, 1862 in the defense of Chattanooga, and at Shellmound June 18, 1862. They were ordered to Knoxville but arrived too late to depart with Gen. Cleburne. In Oct. 1862 Battery was ordered to Mobile Bay and spent several months at Camp Pollard, AL. May 1863 ordered to Jackson, MS, expected to defend Vicksburg, nearly captured not receiving word that the city surrendered. Hasty retreat back to Jackson, where they endured a siege 8 days in the trenches with horses in harness. Retreated to Newton Station, MS & Meridian MS, where they remained until ordered to GA. Under fire at Resaca; Lost Mtn.; Kennesaw Mtn; Peachtree Creek (Confederate Left/Center); New Hope Church (slept on battlefield); defended extreme NW corner of Atlanta (see photos of Ponder house - they were between Ponder house & Federal army); Jonesboro; Alatoona; Griswoldville; Skirmish at Oostanula River; Gen. Hood left the Battery at Corinth to guard stores when he went to Franklin. Feb. 1865 the Battery was ordered to Mobile where they were among the final defenders of Spanish Fort. One-third of the Battery was captured at Spanish Fort; the others escaped.
