Two men in Barry's Battery left diaries. Letters written during Jackson, MS, siege survive. Capt. Barry wrote an article in 1889 that was published by the Confederate Veteran in 1922 (Vol. XXX). Another article was published in 1901 by Lt. Armstrong's daughter, Zella. Details emerge in pension applications. Capt. Barry was well known in Atlanta in later years; superintendent of Confederate Veterans Home in Atlanta for a time. He also participated in 1895 in a committee landmarking battle sites for the Cotton Expo. This committee's work provides exact locations of Barry's Battery at Peach Tree Creek battle, and Battle of Atlanta. Also, William Scaife included the Battery in his research, showing their locations at Kennesaw Mtn., Peach Tree Creek, Resaca, and Allatoona. John Burch Cook, who married Magdalena (Maggie) Barbara Maunz, was wounded at the battle of Resaca (also mentioned in diaries - 2 other men were wounded as well. Cook died about 3 weeks later in Atlanta. Maggie & her mother, Eva Maria Maunz, were in the field with the Battery during the Atlanta campaign, in early July 1864. Sgt. Michael Maunz died March 6, 1863, at Camp Pollard, AL, of fever. His name was misspelled as "Maunce" and misread as "Maurice". His death is reported as M. Maurice of the Lookout/Barry's Artillery. He served in the 7th AL Reg't 1861-1862, along with the Cook brothers, Amos Naman Bice, and Tony Douthit. They were stationed at Fort Morgan, AL, then Barranacas, and probably learned heavy artillery under Francis Shoup. At the end of their 12-month enlistments, they joined the Lookout Artillery. While at Mobile Bay, Michael performed additional duty as cook in the hospital for extra pay. He was a third-generation master stonemason & master brickmason.
