What became of Private Philip N. Riley

Private Philip N. Riley of Company A 2nd Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry may have seemed to just vanished. He was transferred to the engineers during the war and ended up looking for work and moved to Ohio. See Find A Grave Memorial# 57357143 to view his obituary and see a photograph of his grave. His marker at the Union Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio is the only known grave of a former Confederate soldier and special thanks goes to Lauren Clark who alerted me to this soldier.

Research on him indicates his middle initial was N. Philip N. Riley this according to his marriage records and his Confederate Compiled Military Service Records even though the middle initial was lacking on his death certificate.

His CMSR's records referred to him being with the 2nd Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry and said he was transferred to the engineers which his obituary states. Furthermore I interrupted him as the commander of the UCV as I don't believe he was the president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy as his obituary claims. It is obvious however that the Ohio chapter of the UDC did place the marker over his grave in 1918. Columbus, Ohio did have a United Confederate Veterans Camp after the war.

It appears he lived a good bit of his life following the war in Licking County, Ohio. The Lord only knows the last time his grave has had a Confederate flag next to his grave on memorial day but he will in the future.
