It was only his funeral service that "was in charge of the Daughters of the Confederacy." In the Minutes of the 25th Annual Convention of the UDC (p. 474-475) are these sentences for the Ohio Division:
" For several years, aid was given to Mr. Philip Riley, of Newark, a South Carolina Veteran, and, as he was helpless, he was removed to a hospital in Columbus. Death came after a few months. With the help of Dixie Chapter and some outside friends, he was buried September 26th with honors due a Confederate Veteran."
