I was unable to find him in a pre-war census

John G. DeShields, Private, age 21, Capt. R. S. Owens' Company (Carolina Bees), 14th Regiment South Carolina Infantry,* enlisted September 17, 1861 at Camp Butler by Robt. S. Owens for the war, detached as Assistant Commissary January, 1862, appointed 3rd Corporal February 28, 1863, promoted 5th Sergeant July 1, 1863, wounded, gunshot wound. left lung and thumb in battle near Deep Bottom, admitted Receiving and Wayside Hospital, Richmond, Va. July 29, 1864, transfered to Jackson Hospital, Richmond, August 21, gunshot wound left shoulder, minie ball, furloughed for 40 days August 25, 1864, later recorded as 4th Sergeant, n.d., paroled at Appomattox Court House, Va. April 9, 1865, believe a resident of Clinton, S. C.

* This company subsequently became Company F, 14th Regiment South Carolina Infantry
