Re: Deserters of the Civil War
In Response To: Re: Deserters of the Civil War ()

I recently was told of a story that either my gg-grandfather, Michael, or his cousin, Bernard, was drafted into the Union army. As the ship was leaving Boston harbor, he or his cousin jumped ship and showed up at home soaking wet. Interestingly, my gg-grandfather arrived in Boston in 1860, married in 1861, and left the country shortly thereafter (there are no records until he has a son in Ireland). He arrived back in the USA by way of NYC in 1872. His name is Michael Maraghy (USA spelling upon arrival), but the family name in Ireland was Margey / Maragay. Can you help me determine if he is listed as a deserter in Union Army records?

thank you
Mike
