Looking for possible ancestor, John Mcmain, who according to family lore, left behind my grgrandfather William B as an orphan (and wife Margaret). He was born in 1803 in Philly. I find Enlistment 15 Jan 1862 with Company I Penn 99th Inf, and a note that seay "not on M.O. roll." Does this suggest desertion? A William Mcmain shows up living with unrelated PA farm family as 14 yr old "farmhand" in 1870 census. Whole mess makes me suspicious. How do I find more details??
