Re: Samuel J. Windham Co K SC21st Infantry

I have an opinion for you, as well as a question.

The book "Broken Fortunes" lists Samuel Windham, a private in Company K, SC 21st Infantry , died of disease 9-14-62 at Georgetown, SC. There is a listing of Darlington District, but I don't know if he was from that area, or this is where the majority of the SC 21st soldiers came from. From the many diaries and letters I have read, it would be most unlikely that an enlistedman would have been returned by the army to his home area. Some officer's bodies were transported to their home county. I have read of family traveling to retrieve a body. That said, Darlington district is not many miles from Georgetown, and it would have been a simple matter to transport a body up a branch of the Pee Dee to reduce the distance. I suspect he could have been buried at either location.

You indicated William J. Windham enlisted with Samuel. The wonderful data site, www.civilwardata.com lists William as not surviving the War ( and lists a researcher Richard Triebe as supplying some of the information). Can you substantiate William's demise, or provide William's death information? His death is NOT provided in "Broken Fortunes".
