Samuel J. Windham Co K SC21st Infantry

My great great great uncle, Samuel J. Windham of the SC21st Infantry, Co K died in 1862 shortly after enlisting alongside his brother, my gggrandfather William J. Windham. I have copies of Samuel's Compiled Service Records. It states that he died near the Pee Dee River (not certain of the exact terminology as I don't have the paperwork in front of me) He died not of battle injury, but from illness. I would like to find out if a soldier died outside his hometown, was he buried in the area he died, or would the army have transported him back to his family for burial. Thanks
