PSS in Sept of 1864?

Hello Lee,
Very interesting! I had read of that issue of dark jackets and blue britches before. But I am curious about something; my ancestor, John Warren White (Co. "K" [Spartan Rifles], PSS) was a 1st Lt but due to severe wounds at Seven Pines resigned and went home. Sometime in 1864, suffiently healed I reckon, he reenlisted into his old company as a private. He was shot through the neck in the effort to retake Ft. Harrison in Sept. 1864 and died almost a month later.

Anyway, I have always wondered what uniform he was wearing at the time of the assault. A new issue or what? Actually, I figure he was wearing one of his earlier ones from home. The reason I say this is because he probably had several: He was first a Corporal in the Spartan Rifles (from Spartanburg), 5th S.C.. He was promoted to 1st Lt when he reenlisted into the PSS when it was formed. So I figured he probabably had two or three uniforms at home; his original militia uniform, his enlisted man's uniform from when he was a corporal and probabaly had a nicer one made when he made Lieutenant. I will never know, but it has always been an interesting thought to wonder about things like that.

It is sad though, because out of 5 brothers only one came home from the war. One, Hiram White, Jr., stayed in the 5th S.C. and died in or around Antietum in 1862, three others went into the PSS, two of which also died in 1862; William White of Dyptheria, Rufus Belton White lost his right arm at Fraser's Farm, dying the next day. And of course my gr gr grandfather John Warren White died in 1864. Only Jasper White, only 16 or 17 in 1864, survived the war. I have found no record of hs service, but it is handed down in the family that he was with John and was bringing him home when he died of those neck wounds. When I read the names of those who were at appomattox it saddens me to think that none of White brohthers are listed.
Take care,
Dave
