Can someone please clarify exactly HOW the Confederate States determined on secession from the Union. I'm finding general statements in online articles that echo the phrases "the South voted to secede" and "South Carolina voted to secede". But I've not been able to find any details on these "votes." Who exactly voted and how did they vote? Was it simply the elected representatives that determined to secede from the Union, or did the states hold general elections and allowed the populace to determine what course to take?
