Re: Memphis Tenn. 1901 Confederate Veterans Reunio

Let me add this observation. I have read hundreds of newspapers from the 1800s and 1900s and I have never seen a more racist period against blacks than between 1885 and 1915 in public newspapers. It is very disturbing to me to read what was written. Also, this is the highest period of mob lynching's and white hat vigilante justice I have seen accounts of--- against all races. I did not realize until I read these papers, run by political party members, how innocent people were attacked publically. For instance we were taught in school the Poll Tax was to keep Black Americans from voting. This maybe true, however, it was not mandatory to pay the $2.00 which was supposed to pay for the local public schools expenses. And those who did not pay were kept record of and their names printed in the paper under the head line "Delinquent Poll Taxes". If it were only to keep Blacks from voting it backfired. Poor Whites began not paying the tax and not showing up at the voting booth and only the wealthy were represented at voting time. There were reasons for this violence, good people just don't do these things out of the blue. I am trying to understand what was going on. But I have seen a correlation between the growth of these newspapers and the violence, the papers usually favored the mobs, the Blacks and poor Whites were always guilty.
