Re: Newton Knight & "Free State Of Jones"

Depends on what fiction they base it on.

It was reported that the movie rights to "The State of Jones: The Small Southern County that Seceded from the Confederacy" – May 4, 2010 by Sally Jenkins (Author), John Stauffer, both Harvard types, had been sold as soon as it was published.

Except for Newt Knights Confederate record, the book was complete fiction.

"The Free State of Jones: Mississippi's Longest Civil War", 2003, by Victoria E. Bynum, has more historical facts, however, I question Bynum's accuracy and research...and motives. She extends the myth. For instance; she and I share relatives and she wrote in her book that our ancestor was at the Fort Mims massacre during the Creek War. This was news to me. I did my own research and found she had read a transcription error from a reference and did not question it. Makes me believe she wrote what she wanted to believe and not the truth.

One of the original books, I personally own, by Newt's son is a cover up story to make his father look like a victim. "Intimate Sketch of Activities of Newton Knight and Free State of Jones County, by Thomas Jefferson Knight. The book is so old and fragile I keep it in plastic.

My favorite and hated by the above writers, is "The Legend of the Free State of Jones" by Rudy H. Leverett, 1984, is all fact, and questions the myth.
