With the movie to be released this summer I'm curious as to how Hollywood will portray him. Probably as a "Union partisan," out to free the slaves and save the Union ? From the little I've read, it seems to me he was the leader of a well-organized outlaw gang.
Was there ever any attempt made by Knight and his followers to actually co-ordinate their efforts with Union forces ? (burning bridges, tearing up railroad etc.) or did he simply make war on Confederate civilians ? Was there any efforts to actually recruit them into the Union Army, and did the gang refuse to do so ?
I'm a descendant of both Confederate soldiers and southern Unionists. Some of my "home-grown Yankees" also began the war as Confederates as Knight did, some didn't. Those that did eventually joined the Union Army, which I understand Knight never did ?
I understand years after the war, he unsuccessfully attempted to get "compensation" from the Federal government for he and several of his followers about three different times, despite becoming a Radical Republican ?
Am I missing anything here or just being cynical ? I'd like to hear the opinions of someone with real knowledge about "Captain" Knight.
