If I am not mistaken, And I am no expert on the matter. But because of the abundance of Ex US Army Officers in the Confederate Army, The official Confederate army Uniform was very much the same as the United States as the Union Army Uniform except for the gray jacket so as to be different in appearence from the United States Army.

The rank insignia and Jackets color were the only "Official" changes that I have noted. However even late in the war some colors of "Confederate Gray" such as "Richmond Gray" very much appeared to be blue at a distance. A funny incident happened because of this during the siege of Chattanooga. Jenkins Brigade (South Carolina) had been issued new Uniforms (Richmond Gray) in Richmond prior to the campaign. They occupied a section of the line next to The Texas Brigade. The Union pickets and Texas pickets had an unofficial truse between themselves not to shoot at each other. No such truse existed with the South Carolina troops because they were from South Carolina who "Started" the war. Because of the difference in these two Confedeate Uniforms the Texans could sit outside their earthworks and play cards in the daylight, while the South Carolina Troops had to remain out of sight right beside the Texans.
