Re: Great Military Museum
In Response To: Great Military Museum ()

My grandson and I have visited several museums consisting of various Battleships, Aircraft Carriers, Destroyers, Submarines, and the 1st atomic powered merchant ship, the USS Savannah. The Savannah was to expensive to operate profitably and was only in service for a very few years.

There is a Destroyer that participated in the Battle for Okinawa that was hit several times by Japanese Kamiikaze planes, suffered heavy damage, and several of the officers and crew were killed or wounded in the attacks, but they managed to get the ship to a U.S. Naval yard for repairs and it is now permanently at the Charleston, S museum.

There is a huge WWII museum located in New Orleans, LA devoted entirely to WWII. This museum is located in a multistory building There are actual Jeeps, Trucks, Amphibious Landing Craft and several additional items of military equipment on display. We planed to stay for a few hours but stayed for two days and was really impressed.

Another interesting feature is tape recordings of soldiers, sailors, and airmen that were made using there own words that describe the action taking place while the battle was in progress.

My grandson and I also spent over a week visiting various Civil War Battlegrounds, Prison of War Camp Parks & Museums. I am of the opinion that our grandson's exposure to these sites has instilled in him an appreciation for the sacrifices that have been made to preserve our freedoms over the past years have our history more meaningfully to our grandson.

Brandon has been a "long haul" truck driver for approximately 8 years and has been in each providence of Canada and all of the lower forty-eight states and takes the time to visit various military parks and points of interest that are available as he drives through the country. He even stayed overnight in the "Queen Mary" ocean liner which has been converted into a hotel for travelers.

There is a program shown on he Travel Channel several times each week called "Mysteries of the Museum" This program features various museums scattered around the country that is very interesting. They chose a unusual artifact in each museum to feature on each program and give the background of that particular article. In my opinion well worth watching.
