Re: NARA in Washington DC
In Response To: NARA in Washington DC ()

Hello Ken, NARA has a habit of eating up a lot of your time. If you are fortunate to get there when they open you're have to go through a metal detector and put your carry on items in a tub and that also is X-rayed. Waiting in line and going through the detector might cost you 15 minutes. You will then be asked for your NARA card. Of course you won't have one so one will have to be made. This could take an hour or longer. If they open at nine which I think they do it will now be about 10:15 if your lucky. Now you will have to repeat the process over again and go to the front desk to sign in. After that you will go through the double doors again and sign in once more. You then will have to put some of your items in a locker. Always be sure to take extra quarters with you. If you want to make copies you will need to put money on your card. By 11:00 am you may be able to begin your search. The pulls for material are done an hour or so before so your first pull would be at noon except they don't pull at noon so it would be the 1:00 pull. However you don't know exactly where to find your information so you will have to go to the learning aid room. They will give you a lot of material to look at and give you the call numbers to make your pull. If your lucky you may make the 2:00 pull. So now you have been at the NARA now for five hours and have looked at nothing and your probably getting hungry. Don't expect to get much done on your first day. My mind and others were shut down just because of the vast amount of information they have on the first day there. Your second day will go better. In my opinion far less than 50% of the information at NARA is not online. Fold 3 is nothing compared to NARA. Having said that Ancestry and NARA are now partners. I do think you will find your information but it might take up to three or four days. In my opinion your really pushing the envelope in trying to get it done in two days. Also keep in mind you can't make pulls on Saturdays. If your planning on going on a Friday as your first day I'm afraid your trip would be in vain. I would advise you to take a subway cold cut sandwich with you and leave it in your locker. Lap tops and cameras are allowed in the research room. And they do have camera stands but you have to reserve them when you enter the room. The are scheduled for one hour at a time. If you bring your camera case into the research room the guard will just tell you to go down to the bottom floor and leave your case in your locker so another wasted trip and about 20 minutes. If you need additional information as where to park or stay for the best value let me know. Good Luck!
