Re: Southern Towns Destroyed
In Response To: Southern Towns Destroyed ()

I don't recall specific names of the several towns that were burned nor the small farming communities that were pillaged as a result of Sherman's march from Dalton to Savannah, Georgia.

Sherman's goal was to destroy supplies that could support the Confederate army or be used by families left behind to produce food to feed themselves and the Confederate troops fighting Yankees in outside Georgia.

Sherman's army did not transport food supplies to support his army be depended solely on forging for supplies. The burning of barns and crops growing in the fields was common and mules and animals unfit for use by Sherman's Army were shot and left to rot where they fell.

If I recall history, there was a swath of territory approximately sixty miles wide that Sherman's army pillaged or burned that came to the attention of the Yankee troops from the time they entered Georgia at Dalton until they entered S.C. just outside Savannah, Ga.

There were thousands of salves that attached themselves to Sherman's troop which required enormous amounts of food to feed.
