Oh my. Sherman used Mississippi as his training ground for Georgia and South Carolina. Early February 1863 , Lt. Col. James H. Wilson, U.S. Army Engineers purposely opened the Mississippi River Levies during the beginning of the rainy season, and flooded over 6,000 square miles of the Mississippi River Delta region. Grierson burned Okalona, Sherman burned Jackson several times, burned Meridian, burned Greenville, Grant burned Hollysprings...

Not the entire list by any means, but here are a few more by county - town.

Bolivar - Rosedale and Cleveland - Fire in 1863. Prentiss September 14th, 1862, six companies of the 33rd Illinois burned the entire town, never rebuilt.

Chickasaw - Houston - Fire in 1863 On Apr 20th, 1863 some of the Federal troops entered Houston and it was at this time that the records of Chickasaw Co were burned. Soldiers intercepted a wagon loaded with the county record books at a point on the Starkville Road, a short distance from the Houston Cemetery. The troops seized and burned the books on the spot. Two volumes that were overlooked when the records were loaded from the court house are all that remain.

Tippah - Ripley - Record loss, 1863 The Yankees burned the Tippah County courthouse in 1864. The clerk knew they were coming and hid the deed records and the current marriage book until the war was over. Marriage records prior to July 28, 1858 burned with the courthouse.

Lafayette County- Oxford- The original courthouse was burned in August 1864 by Union troops led by General A. J. Smith.

Scott -at Hillsboro- November 8, 1865

Tunica County Federal troops landed the gunboat Diana at Austin’s wharf June 25, 1863 The whole town including the second county courthouse was burned by the troops 1863

Desoto County- Hernando- In June 1863, the Federals, under the command of Colonel George Bryant, destroyed the courthouse and main business houses of Hernando. These troops sacked and burned buildings for five days. In 1864, Hatch 's command visited Hernando and burned a hotel and other buildings.

Washington County Court House, Greenville, - The original courthouse which stood at this site was burned by Union troops during the Civil War.

Marshall County- Holly Springs- the courthouse was burned during the war. Yazoo County - Yazoo City. A fine, large brick courthouse and jail were completed in 1851 when the records were moved from Benton. This courthouse was burned by the Federals during the war but all the records had been probably removed to a distant place of security.

Amite County, Liberty- Female Seminary in the town and a few of the prominent homes were burned by passing Union troops.

Rankin County- Brandon- During the Civil War, Brandon felt the full wrath of General Sherman's Army as it marched through Jackson to Vicksburg. Most of the town was burned by the Yankee soldiers and most private homes were looted or burned. July 19, 1863, Steele's Division.

Clarke County- Quitman- burned the courthouse and hospital, on Feb. 18, 1864.

Greene County- Leakesville courthouse burned March 1864.

Brookhaven sacked and burned 18th July 1863 by Union Forces
