The disenfranchisement of the White voters in the south while using the Black voter to maintain political power in the south during reconstruction. The redistribution of land siezed for taxes, (40 Acres and a Mule). Lead to such things as the Poll Tax to validate the voter rolls post reconstruction.

These were some of the numerious reasons for most of the animosity between the races post Civil War and lead to the US Supreme Court decision that seperates of races was a legitmate practise which lead to segration. And this was not just limited to the South. The United States Congress in 1872 under President Hiram Grant failed to pass a "Civil Rights act" and one was not passed until 1964.

The war has not ended because we have not gotten over its effects. Including special interest groups which still seek to profit from the past, and an out of control, heavy handed, overbarring, dictatorial, Federal Government. We cannot know what we are today if we do not understand how we got here.
