Re: Michigan officer of USCT buried in Massachuset

Some luck in your search for Colonel Chauncey J. Bassett. The following is where he is buried. Lee Mass Cemetery - Seguins.net
www.seguins.net/1893Watchman/Towns_Schools.../LeeMassCemetery.htm

As it turns out we were both correct in our assumptions. He was buried in the Congregational Church Center Cemetery which is now known as the Fairmount Cemetery in Lee, Massachusetts. He also is buried next to his wife Lydia who died on November 24, 1869. She lived with her parents (Stephen and Hannah Bradley) after the death of her husband in 1864.

I'm still at a loss as to why so many graves in Massachusetts are not photographed. Compared to other New England States they are far behind. However I was able to read the inscription on Chauncey F. Bassett's tombstone; see internet address above. You will have to scroll down toward the bottom of the page. Why someone would to all of the work in writing down the inscriptions and not take a photograph is a bit of a mystery in itself. The tombstone for Chauncey F. Bassett reads "Chauncey J. Bassett Col. 73d U.S.C.I. (I would assume that stands for United States Colored Infantry) Born at Lee, Mass. Aug. 7, 1830 Died in Christian Hope and trust at Chernryville, (Cheneyville) LA. May 7, 1864 Aged 33 years, 9 mos. The gift of God is Eternal Life through Jesus Christ our Lord"

Chauncey and Lydia had one child named Austin Bradley Bassett and he was born in 1859 and died in 1916 and appears to be buried in Connecticut. He too would apply for a pension as a child of the soldier and received a pension. I am assuming that Austin probably lived with his grandparents Stephen and Hannah Bradley for a short while after the death of his mother in 1869.

There is a woman named Bambi and she is the local expert insofar as the local graves in Lee, Massachusetts. If you will call the Lee, Massachusetts library at 413-243-0385 they will provide you with her phone number and email address. Bambi may be able to take a photograph of Chauncey F. Bassett's tombstone for you.
