That's just it...your family. Out of nearly 70 or so family members of mine that served, I know of only two that packed up and left to the West-- and both had been galvanized, the rest either died on the camps, battlefield, in POW camps or at home. They scratched out an existence from what was left, by my knowledge, they didn't hide out-- they went on. I don't see large numbers of ex-Confederates hiding from the census takers. In fact, I find them (my family) doing things like starting businesses, engaging in law, politics and in one case, taking action against those who cheated them in lawsuits after the war. One of my family members sued, through the Alabama supreme court, against ship owners who owed him money to ship goods from Havana to Mobile (he was a blockade runner) and won...and this after the war. They were very active in the public and the public record.
