Not all that happened to or with dogs during the war was, shall I use the word... "noble"?
If I recall correctly this info comes from the book Rebels at Rock Island. It seems that while the prisoners were near complete starvation that a camp commander took great delight in bringing his dog into the compound and feeding him in front of the prisoners. Seems the dog was getting better choice of menu and much more of it than he needed. One day, while roaming the compound the dog just up and disappeared. To this day his fate remains unknown. But I would bet that at least a few Rebs' stomachs didn't growl as loud as usual at the next roll call :0)
