J.W. Booth was born to an English parents who were actors, he was born in northern Maryland on the border of Pennsylvania, he belonged to and was a delegate to the "Know Nothing" Party- which would morph into the Republican Party. During the War years he was in Chicago, New York City, Boston, Providence, Rhode Island, and Hartford, Connecticut performing plays. He courted and was engaged to the daughter of a Republican Senator, John P. Hale of New Hampshire. He took an oath to the Union in early 1863 while performing in St. Louis. He never served in the Confederate services, he did not own Southern property of any notice, his large investments were Northern --- not your average Southerner and should not be included as such. His only kinship to the South was he hated abolitionist and Lincoln.
