John M Wahl, Vet, 9 Miss Inf, Co. E

Hi, I do the web pages for Soldiers' Rest (in Cedar Hill Cemetery) in Vicksburg. We also have a section on the web site for CSA veterans interred there, and I am currently working on John M. Wahl, a private in the 9th Miss. Inf., Co. E.

This stumps me -- John Wahl (sometimes spelled Wall) was a private throughout his service.

Yet on the ordnance report he signs as "Major" or "Major acting"
and titles himself as "Ordnance Officer for the division."

There are no records of him being anything other than a private. Could a "private," be an "acting"?

The title of this report dated 17 Jan 1862 is, "Consolidated Report of Ordnance Stores in 2 Division 1st Corps A. M."

What, please, is A. M. ?

I need professional remarks on this one. Can you help, please?

Here is the URL of my page with everything I have done so far if you need it.

Thanks in advance. /Anna
