Re: 37TH MISS. INF. REG. CAPTURED
In Response To: 37TH MISS. INF. REG. CAPTURED ()

I noticed that some of the 37th are listed as being captured in Coffeeville on December 3, 1862. There were few, if any, Rebels in Coffeeville on that date, and certainly no Yankees. The Yankees entered Water Valley, 10 miles north, of December 4. Some of the 37th may have been stragglers on the 4th and 5th, but the Yankees didn't get to Coffeeville until after noon on December 5.

This was part of what they called the Retreat From Abbeville. I was trying to find additional information on this retreat, and found this thread. I have a chapter about it in the new book about Coffeeville. I'm not here trying to sell books here, but instead to gather more information about the retreat. If you happen to be interested in the book, the title is "The Essential Guide to the Battle of Coffeeville" and it's on Amazon.

If any of you have additional info of any kind on the Retreat from Abbeville (Abbeville - Grenada), please email me. I am also curious to know where the info was found that lists all the men in the 37th that were captured in north Mississippi in the fall and early winter of 1862. I'd like any citations you could give so I can use the info in any upcoming revisions.

My website on the Mississippi Central Railroad Campaign is:

Thanks for the information.
