It appears that Albert returned home on sick furlough and remained so through at least April, 1864

These records filed in the index under Crook, Albert G., although all the cards carry the correct name of Cross

Albert G. Cross, Private, Company G, 2nd Regiment, 1st Brigade, Army of Mississippi,* enlisted August 24, 1861 at Iuka, Miss. for 12 months, captured at Ft. Donelson February 16, 1862, recorded at Camp Douglas, Ill., returned to duty from Camp Douglas hospital March 29, 1862, sent to Vicksburg, Miss. to be exchanged, on sick furlough October 2, 1862, subsequently on later muster rolls recorded as absent, on sick furlough given November 1, 1862, approved by Lt. Col. & Surgeon, recorded on April 1, 1864 as absent, on sick furlough, “. . . is still unable to report in person, but reports by certificate,” no further records

* This company subsequently became Company G, 23rd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry [Tippah Rifleman]
