My great-grandfather, John Robert Swanzy, has a very nice Civil War headstone on his grave in the Rowan Cemetery in Lowndes County, Mississippi. He was born in South Carolina on March 24, 1827 and died in Mississippi on April 4, 1908. Since he has this relatively new headstone, I am sure that there are records somewhere to document his Civil War service. Does anyone have any idea how my family can get a copy? I have contacted Veterans Affairs in Washington DC but they could not help me.
