Re: Wartime Photo of Iuka, Mississippi

Actually, not all of them were captured. My great great grandfather was one of a handful who escaped with Nathan Bedford Forrest. When they arrived at Fort (I forgot the name), he was temporarily transferred and promoted to sergeant in Co. G, 32nd MS Inf, where he trained new recruits. After the 26th was repatriated, he was transferred back to them as Private again. Later in the War, he was promoted over Corporal to Sergeant again (ironically, a month after that...a week before Lee's surrender...he was captured at Hatcher's Run and was kept POW at Point Lookout, MD, until 3 months later, when he finally agreed to sign his loyalty oath). I was able to get all of his service records, including list of engagements, at www.fold3.com, which is even more thorough than ancestry.com. I have a copy of the orders, signed by General Bragg, transferring him from the 32nd back to the 26th.

One thing I wish I could find are his US Army records (Corporal, 1855-1860).
