May 12.— Muster-in roll of Captain Robert J. Bowen's Com-
pany, in the Twelfth Regiment of Mississippi Volunteers, com-
manded by Colonel Richard Griffith, called into the service of the
Confederate States in the Provisional Army under the provisions
of the Act of Congress passed February —, 1861 by — from
May 12, 1861 (date of this muster) for the term of one year,
unless sooner discharged. . . .

General Notation: Started from Brookhaven, Mississippi May 10
on the march for Corinth, Mississippi under orders from governor
of the state of Mississippi to be mustered into the service of the
Confederate States. Mustered into the service of the state of Mis-
sissippi March 30.
Stationed at Camp Masked Battery near Fairfax Station, Virginia,
August 31, 1861.
Stationed at camp, Davis' Ford, Virginia, January-February
1862.

Stationed at camp near Fredericksburg, Virginia, November-
December 1862.
Stationed at camp near Fredericksburg, January-April 1863.
Stationed near Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, May-June 1863.
Stationed near Orange Court-House, Virginia, July-August 1863.
Stationed at camp near Brandy Station, Virginia, September-
October 1863.
Stationed near Orange Court-House, Virginia, November-Decem-
ber 1863.

Stationed at camp near Orange Court-House, Virginia, January-
February 1864.
Remain in the same camp as when last mustered and paid.
Have done one tour of picket duty at Cowes Ford on the Rapidan
on or about February 26. Private E. L. Bowen, [Jr.] dropped by
orders of lieutenant-colonel commanding regiment, he (Bowen)
having been promoted to rank of lieutenant by Secretary of War
December 1862. Private John Hand dropped by orders of lieu-
tenant-colonel commanding, he (Hand) having been continually
reported absent without leave since March 1862 and is legally
transferred to another command.

Stationed near Petersburg, Virginia, May-June 1864.
May 5.— Left camp near Orange Court-House moving in the
direction of Fredericksburg.
May 6.— Engaged in the battle of the Wilderness, one man
killed.
May 9-10.— Remained on the line without further engagement
until May 9, when we moved in the direction of Spotsylvania
Court-House, which place was reached on May 10.
May 11-12.— Engaged in battle of Spotsylvania Court-House.
One officer and one man killed, one man wounded.
May 22.— Moved to Hanover Junction about May 22.
May 25.— Engaged the enemy, having sharpshooting on the
skirmish line all day.

May 28-29.— Moved to near Mechanicsville about May 28 or 29.
June 2.— [Moved] to Cold Harbor.
June 5.— All in support of the line and under heavy shelling part
of the day and took position in front of Turkey Ridge. Our com-
pany on picket.
June 13.— Constant sharpshooting and shelling in the morning,
when the enemy withdrew. No casualties at this place but one
officer captured and one man seriously wounded. Moved to near
Jack's Shop on Charles City Road on June 13 and remained in
line

June 16-18.— We moved to near Malvern Mill and rested until
morning of June 18, when we marched to south side to Petersburg
and took position in line of battle near Petersburg and company
on picket.
June 23.— Engaged in skirmish in the morning. No casualties.

August 4.— One man died in Richmond, Virginia from wounds
received at Turkey Ridge June 6.
August 16-18.— Left the trenches near Petersburg, Virginia from
Battery No. 28 for Fussell's Mill, north side of James River by
way of Richmond. Engaged in charge at that place on August 18.
August 20.— Returned to our former position near Petersburg,
Virginia by way of Drewy's Bluff.
August 21.— Engaged in fight near Reams' Station on Weldon
Railroad. Had one officer and twelve men taken prisoner and
four men wounded.
August 22.— Returned to our former position in trenches.
September 9.— One man taken prisoner on picket near Peters-
burg, Virginia.
September 12.— One man killed.
October 27.— One man missing at Burgess' Mill.
Stationed near Petersburg, Virginia, September-October 1864.
October 27-28.— Left entrenchments near Petersburg, Virginia.
Skirmished with the enemy in the afternoon, one man missing.
Returned to entrenchments next day, October 28.

November 9-11.— Left the entrenchments in the evening. Went
